Rajshahi College


Rajshahi College An educational institute located in Rajshahi town of Bangladesh. This college was established in 1873. After the Dhaka College and Chittagong College Rajshahi College is the 3rd oldest college in Bangladesh. Rajshahi College is the best college in Bangladesh, according to the information of 685 colleges affiliated to the National University affiliated and postgraduate level.  The first ever Masters Degree in this College is started in Bangladesh. The college is located beside the Rajshahi Collegiate School in the heart of the city of Rajshahi. The school was named Collegiate because it was located beside this ancient college. It provides master's and honorary degrees under the Bangladesh National University. Since 1996, the registration of students at the higher secondary level in this college has been stopped but it is now being re-admitted from the 2010-11 academic year.

History and background:

Establishment of Rajshahi Metropolitan was established in 1828 by the establishment of Baulya English School. The institute had become a guide in the history of modern education in East Bengal. Originally for the promotion and promotion of English education, it was established in the efforts of the English officers and local dignitaries working in Rajshahi at the time of the bollywood English School. This small 'Bauliya English School' of the day was nationalized by the provincial government in 1836. This school is known as Rajshahi Zilla (or district) school (this school is now known as Rajshahi Collegiate School). In view of the concerted effort and application of the most prominent citizens of Rajshahi region, the district school was honored as a post-secondary college in 1873, and in the same year, only six students, including five Hindu and one Muslim Muslim students, With the introduction of the Higher Secondary Class F. A (First Arts) course. In 1878, after giving the first grade status to this college and named after "Rajshahi College", it was affiliated with the University of Calcutta. When the course was started, Rajshahi College was established as the first and the best college of North Bengal. In 1881 the postgraduate class was inaugurated in 1881 and the BL Course was added in 1883. In 1909, the new law of the University of Calcutta failed to meet its demands, if the college could not meet its requirements, Masters course and BL. The course affiliation was canceled.

The role of land lord, zamindars and wealthy people in spreading western education in Rajshahi was noteworthy. Among them, Zamindar Haranath Roy Chowdhury of Dubhhati, King Pramathnath Roy of Dighapatiya, Raja Pramod Roy and Basanta Roy; The queen of Puthia Sharatsundari Devi and Hemant Kumari Devi; Balharir Kumar Sherbindu Roy; Khan Bahadur Emad Uddin Ahmed, Kijia-e-Sadat's translator Mirza Mohammad Yusuf Ali, Haji Lal Mohammad, Khan Bahadur Rashid Khan Chowdhury, Khan Bahadur Ershad Al Khan Chowdhury, and Deputy Speaker of the Bengal Legislative Assembly Barrister Ashraf Ali Khan Chowdhury were the foremost among the zamindars of Natore. Besides, Khan Chowdhury zamindar family of Natore, his family residence Chowdhury of Hetem Khan area of ​​Rajshahi City Laws provide free rent and food for about twenty poor Muslim students studying in Rajshahi College. Their role in the development of the education of the backward backward Muslim society was significant.

The first principal of the college was Hargobind Sen, who was the headmaster of Rajshahi Zilla School. He was in charge of the college for five years (1873-1878). In 1875 only two students passed the first batch of F.A. examinations. The government wanted to uproot the college, but upgraded this college to BA by Rajshahi Association's hard efforts. The program of introduction of the course was undertaken. Rajshahi Association's President Dighapatiya Raja Pramathnath Roy Bahadur gave 150,000 rupees to the government through Rajshahi Association for introduction of degree courses in Rajshahi College. In 1904, Maharani Hemantakumari Sanskrit College was established under Rajshahi College administration to teach Sanskrit without fee. Raja Krishnendu Hall was built in 1910 with the financial assistance of Kumarhar Sharadindu Roy of Balhahar. In 1915, the college authorities built a physics building at a cost of Tk 57,145. Six hostels were built in the effort of Rajshahi Association's initiative and Principal Kumudinikanta Banerjee: 5 at a cost of Rs 3,53,863 in 1922 and 1 in 2, 1923, two double-decker hostels were constructed. In the 1925-26 session, the building was constructed at a cost of 86,809 rupees and in 1927, the residence of the principal was constructed at the bank of the Padma at the southern side of the college. In this way, gradually other buildings were built around 35 acres of land.

Under the formation of National University in 1992, the college re-opened the Master level course in 1994. Although the higher secondary level courses were closed since 1996, it was re-introduced from the 2009-10 academic year considering the meritorious students of the higher secondary level of the region. At present, Rajshahi College offers 22 courses in Honors and 21 courses in Master Courses. There are 56 female teachers among 249 teachers of the college.

Language Movement and Liberation War:

The teachers and students of Rajshahi College have been contributing a lot to the social and political problems of the nation. They have directly participated in Swadeshi movement. Immediately after the February 11, 1952 Language Movement in Dhaka, students and teachers of Rajshahi College joined the Language Movement and devoted the language movement to a martyr's memorial to commemorate the martyrs who were considered to be the country's first martyr's monument. The monument built in 1969 destroyed the Pakistani occupation army in 1971. To restore it, the present monument was constructed in 1973. Teachers and students actively participated in 1962 and 1969 student movements. In the liberation war of Bangladesh, they joined a large number and helped to free the country by fighting with great courage and bravery.

Construction of buildings:

At the beginning of the establishment, Rajshahi College had no own building. The leaders of the Rajshahi Association took the initiative to construct the first building of the college. The present administration building was built in 1884 with a skilled English engineer costing Tk 61,700. The bold red-colored double-edged building is still standing high on the side of the city's main and oldest roads by conquering the era. With the change of time, five science building, two kalabhana, a separate building for the department of erarge, has been established in Rajshahi College; Gallery building is on the western bank of the pond. Gallery building was built in 1888 and firstly known as Rajshahi Madrasa and later known as Gallery No. 17. This building, now known as Haji Muhammad Mohsin Bhavan, is built in financially by the famous giant Haji Muhammad Mohsin. Mohammedan Fuller Hostel, one of the most beautiful establishments in the college, was built in 1909. The building is currently being used as the office of Bangla, Management, Accounting, Urdu, Sanskrit, Philosophy, Islamic History and Sanskrit Division of the College. The new Kamaruzzan building has been constructed on the banks of the pond. The front facade of the college has a Shaheed Minar and Library and Auditorium building on the west side of the Shaheed Minar.

It is built on the east side of the shrine of Hazrat Shah Makhdum (Rh), on the north side of the Padma River, the second house of the Principal. This building houses renowned educators of the subcontinent. It is used as the residence of the current principal of the college. The building built in the British architectural style is still intact. There are two storied residential buildings for teachers on the east side of the Principal's residence. For students, a hostel with six blocks has been built in the pre-department. In the post-secondary period, another block of the hostel was built and two girls' girls were built on the north side of the college.

Residential halls:

In 1922, the journey of Rajshahi College Muslim Hostel began for the period of time. There are a total of 07 buildings in the hostel, the buildings have been named after the names of 07 Birshreshthas. The first Shaheed Minar in Bangladesh is located in this hostel in memory of the martyrs of 52 language movement. There is a Hindu hostel for Hindu students of the college for residential accommodation. The hostel is named "Maharani Hemant Kumari Hindu Hostel". Which was established in 1899. The hostel named after the Maharishi Maharaani Hemant Kumari Devi, who contributed to the establishment of Rajshahi College, was named after the hostel.

In order to ease the sufferings of the students, in 1966, a two-story building with the office building, the residence of the caretaker, was built for the convenience of girls living outside Rajshahi College, which was named Main Building and through this, the journey of the student school started. The main building was later renovated. With the increase in the number of students, for the purpose of resolving their housing problems, Newbloc, Uttara Building, Balaka and Rahmatunnessa building were built.

Library:

One of the reasons for Rajshahi College's popularity is its library, which has an abundance of old, recent and recent cinebooks, journals and periodicals, and it is a reliable source of internationally renowned printed information. There are many rare books, gazettes, encyclopedia and manuscript in the college library, and many of the ancient manuscripts are rich in manuscripts. At present, (13/03/2013) the number of books in the college library is 77,949. The library is located on the west side of the administration of the college.

Laboratory:

Each of the science department of science has its own laboratory, which is equipped with modern and original equipment for testing.

Publishing:

There is a tradition of regularly announcing popular anniversaries and periodicals of Rajshahi College. In addition, the publication of specialized and research-oriented journals is now enriching this tradition.

Enrolled student:

In 1873, on April 1, only six students started traveling, but the college was overwhelmed by all the uncertainty and obstacle, and the golden future was seen. In 1878, the number of its students was increased to one hundred. Every year, the number of students increased in 1900 to 200 in 2000, four hundred in 1910, eight hundred in 1920 and in 1924, more than one thousand people were upgraded. In 1873, the number of Muslim students was 1 but it remained unchanged for the next 5 years, but this figure rose to 156 in 1916 and 215 in 1924. In 1931, the first student was admitted.

Later, the number of Muslim students continued to increase and in 1947 the number of Muslim students surpassed the Hindu students. In 1970, there were 1,840 students in college, out of which 300 students After independence, the number rose to 4,732 in 1990, in which the number of students was 1,352. The number of students in college increased to 8,000 in 2000 and more than 32,000 students in 2016.
